No. These are not the words to a psychedelic folk rock song. Are you shocked to find out this is a verse from Spice Up Your Life, the 1997 smash hit by the Spice Girls? I watched the video and it sparked my interest. The wikipedia article is so weird. Read it and let me know if you agree, or if I’m just being a bone head.

I wouldn’t call myself the flavored blunt’s biggest fan, but it’s a drag that Bloomie is outlawing that shit. All flavored tobacco, except menthol/ wintergreen, is now BANNED. Banned!

In other smoker oppression news, NYU sent out a memo today announcing a plan to “expand the no smoking zone.” The memo proposes that cigarettes must be sucked down 15 feet away from any NYU building entrance or “fresh air vent”. My question is, if NYU has a building downtown every 15 feet…what room does that leave us to smoke? And how will people meet each other if they cant ask for a light outside Bobst library?

I saw the Man himself, Leonard Cohen, at Madison Square Garden tonight. It ruled. I would mention highlights, but it was all one enormous highlight. It was nice to see such a huge show with an older crowd. By that I mean, almost everyone was in their 50s. And that was good because in the abyss that was the crowd tonight, there were hardly any little cameras or cell phones in the air. Just darkness and Leonard Cohen with his immaculate band. It was so peaceful. A really wonderful night.

In a halting, off-key voice, I sang Frank Sinatra’s version of “New York, New York” and described it as the story of a villager who tries to succeed in the city and support his family. I sang Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” and described it as a portrayal of the struggles of average Americans.

If you have not kept up with David Rohde’s five part piece in the New York Times about his months held captive by the Taliban, I suggest you check it out. The courage he needed to survive is astonishing.
